Measurement Day 2

Day 2    Today we will describe the role of measurement as a tool in science.  We will show the connection between measurement and math in a variety of daily activities, like cooking (cake chemistry video).

Activity:  Converting a recipe from standard U.S. cooking units to Metric Units

Take the following recipe for German Chocolate Cake and rewrite it, converting the units of measure to Metric Units

1 (4-oz.) package of Baker’s Sweetened Chocolate

1/2 cup boiling water

1 cup butter or margarine

2 cups sugar

4 egg yolks (no need to convert)

4 egg whites (no need to convert)

1 teaspoon Vanilla

2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup buttermilk

To do the conversion, use the following information

1 ounce (oz.) = 28 grams

1 pound = 500 grams

2.2 pounds = 1 kilogram

1 teaspoon = 5 milliliters (ml)

1 Tablespoon = 15 milliliters (ml)

1 cup = 1/4 liter

1 quart = 1 liter

Homework for Day 2

Write down your favorite recipe.  Then convert it to Metric Units of measurement, using the conversion information given above.  If you do not have a favorite recipe, use the recipe for Coconut Pecan Frosting given below

1 cup evaporated milk

1 cup sugar

3 beaten egg yolks (no need to convert)

1/2 cup butter

1 teaspoon Vanilla

1 1/3cup Baker’s Angel Flake Coconut

1 cup chopped pecans (roasted)

You have now completed the work for Measurement Day 2
