Measurement Day 3

Day 3    Today we will reflect further on the idea of scales as they arise in cooking, physics and chemistry.  We will identify the standard scales, and the corresponding units known as SI or metric quantities, which are used in science to define these scales:  length, time, amount as defined by meters, seconds, moles, and kilograms.

Navigate to the following website:

metricamerica.com

Explore the various links on this site.

1.) write down the names of the 7 SI (metric) base units

2.) make a list of the prefixes that are used with these base units to form metric units of measurement.

3.)  take notes of other metric facts that you would like to remember

Homework Day 3 Measurement:

1.) Identify and write down each metric unit of measurement in the story below.

2.) Tell which part of the metric unit is the the base unit and which is the prefix.

3.)  Convert the prefix to a number:  eg.  1 kilometer becomes 1 x 10^3 meters.

Story

Joe took his 5.0 kg dog, Misty, for a 1.5 km walk.    The temperature was 298 K.  Joe had eaten 0.2 kg of cereal this morning and consumed 500 mg of Vitamin C.  He also drank 40 mL of orange juice.  Joe walked for about 1/2 hour with Misty, but he enjoyed himself so much that it felt like only 1 ms had passed.  The temperature rose to 302 K.  Joe went home to take a much needed 30 minute nap.
